So, I finished my NaNoWriMo on November 25th. The 50K goal was reached at about 9PM that evening. It was exciting to have done that exercise this year.

During the OctoPrep I gathered my chapters together, we had a lot of staff meetings. We discussed the plot, the settings, the ideas for the little novel I had dreamed of. They gave me some input and I wrote notes. Some ideas were batted around, like any committee meeting. Then once the actual NaNoWriMo even started, I sent those people I had just met to their appointed settings. Along the way, they took some turns I hadn't expected. Many times a character would take a left turn when I wasn't looking. And then another character would enter without invitation. Such is the creative process. Once I had all the characters, they were skeletons, I had to add flesh and personality. Then I had to build for them real worlds to inhabit.

I will miss spending time with my new friends!

I saw a wonderful sight the other day. There were three wild turkeys in a yard in town. I saw them on my walk at noon.

A tom turkey and two hens were nibbling on green weeds in a yard. A passerby laughed and said "They are in town because they heard it is Thanksgiving," We had a good laugh about that.

But then I thought how unusual it is to see wild birds like that in our small town. And these were not small birds. The male had to be at least knee high and the females not much smaller. They were quite tame, and didn't seem to mind at all that I was standing not more than two feet away from them.

But then of course, we have deer in town, also. They wander about ll the time like tame dogs. So why should I be amazed that birds wander about also? Perhaps it's the fact that most of us are removed from the wild. The vast majority of us never see anything wild.

So anytime I see wild animals I am glad and hope they don't get shot or run over by cars. Thank goodness for the wild.

I walk every day. I've always walked, even as a child. It's just something I do. I seem to have a route I follow. One day I go down a certain street and then the next day another street. I usually walk about a mile or so every day right before lunch.

So when you walk every day over the same route, you begin to notice the neighborhoods. You notice dogs, good and bad. You notice cars, which ones belong where. And if you walk long enough, four years now, you notice when houses go up for sale, then get sold, and then go up for sale again.

A weird thing I noticed one day was a full sized airplane in a yard. Yep, an airplane. One day it wasn't there and the next day there it was. Now I live in a small town/city in rural Montana. The nearest airport is about three miles away. I thought to myself, I need a picture of this. Tomorrow, I will get a picture. And you know what is coming. The next day, the airplane is gone. Hmm..where was it before and where did it go? haven't seen it since. Weird.

Then today there is this car, a silver SUV with tinted windows driving up and down the street. Back and forth. Enough times that you begin to notice. My friend got worried. Her husband stopped the car and confronted the driver. Ooops - don't worry mister, they say, showing him their badges, all is under control here. He was ready to beat up a U.S. Marshall.

You just can't make up this stuff! I think one or both of these events may end up in stories some day. Oh - and you have to hear the one about the lady in the airport going down the escalator in a wheelchair with an attendant........

Does it make anybody else crazy when you see misspelled words on a sign? How about in print? On a newscast? I swear, with all the computer programs out there, I don't know why anyone would, or could, misspell words these days.

Just the other day I walked by a shop in town. This shop is new. Great! I read further down the hand-written sign. "Come in to veiw our new shop." Arggh. Then there was this. "Get our advise on flower arrangements." Double aargh. Come on people. If you are making a sign and people are going to read it, maybe you should check the spelling and usage of the words first? Would you do that? I would.

But maybe we are too lazy these days. I mean, they don't even teach writing in school anymore, and by what I am seeing, spelling and grammar have also fallen by the wayside.

I think it is a sad commentary. Fine to keep the lazy spelling and grammar in a story for a character but in real life, we should be precise. Or am I just getting to be a cranky old person? Probably.....

My computer is a MacBook Air. I just installed a nifty little application. I have a hard time with abbreviations like app, or veggies, or such, so I call things the name they are. ANYWAYS, this little program I am sure was developed for folks that have a hard time typing, It is voice activated. So when I have it out of 'sleep' mode, I can talk and it will type.

I tried this the other day. Pretty nifty. I understood me and even typed in punctuation if I said 'comma', VOILA, a comma appeared. Of course, it wasn't fool proof and I had to go back and change some things. But wouldn't it be amazing if someone could invent a process where you could think and then it could appear. Oooohh, what a great idea for a science fiction story/novel! But does that exist in real life? Hmm.... need to investigate.

How is everyone's novel doing? Got to admit - mine is taking some twists and turns I hadn't expected. But then that is what makes writing so exciting. I haven't been contributing to writing.com this month. Kind of sad, I enjoy all the contests here and enjoy entering. But I feel that all my energies need to go to this novel writing month. Anyone else feel the same way?

There will be time in December to do Flash Fiction, and The Writer's Cramp and Persontification again. I know those will still be around and will still test my writing skills. And by then I will maybe have my 50,000 words completed and have a cohesive story. Time will tell.

Does anyone else have a problem with this time change we do each year, twice a year? It almost makes me want to move to a different state. Indiana and Arizona I last knew did not do the time switch thing.

Montana gets really dark this time of year. Most of live above the 45th parallel. It starts geting dark about 3:30 PM right before the winter solstice, no joke. And then the sun doesn't rise until about 8 AM in the morning. I gotta tell you, it can be a drag.

And that is why I have a daylight machine. Yep, a daylight simulating machine, So when, and if, the gray gets overwhelming, I can, by the magic of electronics, simulate daylight. Trick my brain into thinking it got real rays.

Of course, I could always hop a plane for points west and south for 3 months. But then I would miss out on all that great powder and cross country ski season!

So - is everyone started their novel? That is, if you are doing NaNoWriMo? I guess I started early, knowing I would probably have trouble finishing, But I guess it will work out. If I stay with writing every day.

And I guess that is the key, isn't that? Writing every day, every chance you get. if you are serious about writing, then you do write every day.
Luckily there are so many tools to help. This site is amazing, also the official NaNoWriMo site. Plus, and I haven't checked this out, I am sure you can buy all the books you can imagine. But think about it, if you spend all the time reading about how to do your novel, when will you have time to write your novel?

Just jump in and do it. Don't overthink the problem. Go with the flow. Be creative.

Enough cliches? Sorry - I digress. Time to write.
