When I listened to the song the first time, it made me sad. I couldn't hear the lyrics well, so like Kåre Enga in Udon Thani I looked up the lyrics. No wonder I felt so sad. I understand not playing songs, but sometimes I don't. Things have changed so much.
, you are so right, Andy. I am of that age. I remember listening to Black Lace as a kid, but I don't remember this song. The one I mostly remember is "Superman." Oh, the number of times I stood on the dance floor acting out all the parts of the song and singing at the top of my lungs! And, of course, who can forget "Agadoo"? We had such a privileged childhood
As for Sangria. Never again. I drank rather too much of it in the summer of 2000 while in Ibiza with friends. It put me off it for life. I do remember liking it at the time, though.
Ouch. I don't think I've heard it before. I looked up the lyrics. About as depressing as it gets. And yet, having spent 2 winters in a homeless shelter it rings true... a bit triggering. The BBC? Too bad the English never understood the Irish. Their loss.
Mini-review: Very clearly written with a personal touch. Seems the right length. Good choice of song. Sorting-hat-rate? You're the first! Hmmm. Slytherin? (I'm saying... 4.3... as it's 1st and you may do better... and one should always leave room on top for cream. I like it a lot.)
Andy, you are totally right - A lot of modern music is full of swearing and derogatory references - look at even something fairly mainstream like "Eminem and Rhianna - Love the Way you Lie" ----- this is literally about domestic abuse and much more obvious that Fairytale of New York, yet alone the more "hardcore" type of rap, metal music. Look at 50 Shades of Grey (haven't actually read it lol) Look at GAME OF THRONES!!
It is the Nanny State gone mad. Yes I agree let's not show this stuff on TV but really...
(Incidentally have you ever seen "Naked Attraction"- WTF????)
I can understand the reasons for putting limits on things. For example, here in the UK can't show sex on TV before 10pm, and kids can't get into the cinema to see 15 and 18 rated films; we want to limit what our kids are exposed to.
It's this retrospective censoring that annoys the shit out of me. They start with little things, like this song or editing the N-word out of Huckleberry Finn (though maybe 200+ uses of it by Twain was excessive), but where does it end?
What about all of the rap and reggae songs filled with violence, swearing, and sexual references?
What about sex in literature?
What about nudity in art?
Today we censor the words slut and faggot from Fairytale of New Year, tomorrow we may as well emasculate the Statue of David.
