Started editing an old piece
Aylinn could still feel the electricity of his lips vibrating along her neck. His scent still encompassed her as if she was a planet and he was her atmosphere. And now, she was stuck with a million questions and zero answers. The most important being, after all this time running, why had he come back now? Aylinn shook the thoughts from her mind. She didn’t have the time to think about him or where he had been all these years. And she most certainly didn’t have time to think about what he was going to do now that he was back. Unfortunately, thinking about him was completely unavoidable.

Trying to focus on the situation at hand, which included getting to work on time and avoiding an awkward conversation with Gage, her best friend and work partner, Aylinn began to look for her things. After taking a few moments to gather her ChapStick, keys, and wallet, Aylinn headed out the front door. As she closed the door behind her, Aylinn was reminded of the previous night. A night that she never thought would come. A night that she had longed for and dreaded at the same time. As a fearful shudder traveled down Aylinn’s spine, a single tear rolled down her cheek. Without thinking, Aylinn leaned up against the closed door and drifted off in thought.

After checking out the open mic night that Gage couldn’t stop raving about, Aylinn decided to walk home on her own last night. Gage had a bad habit of trying to set Aylinn up with random friends, but this was the first one that she went through with (and most likely the last). It was more like a “meet and greet” at their favorite coffee spot with Aylinn, Gage, and the random schmuck that he had been talking about for the last month. For whatever reason, Gage thought that this guy had it in him to sweep Aylinn off her feet, but clearly, he was wrong...again, so she decided to bail and walk home by herself.

As Aylinn’s walk came to an end and she was standing in front of her house, her sense of fear began to sharpen. Something felt wrong. Aylinn shook her head to shake off the goosebumps on the back of her neck. Aylinn realized that the atmosphere didn’t feel “wrong”. Something felt intense...dangerous even. As she walked up to the front door, she immediately knew what she was sensing, and she knew that life was about to drastically change.

Even before she touched the handle, Aylinn knew that he was inside the apartment. She didn’t understand how it could be possible, but as she opened the front door, she saw the Assassin standing right there in her living room. While his title was admittedly intimidating, the man wasn’t just an assassin. The man standing in her living room was her mate. The mate that had left her behind 700 years prior.

Even though she couldn’t stand the thought of him, let alone seeing him in her apartment, Aylinn couldn’t blame him for leaving. After all, the assassin did commit a crime that was punishable by death. But no matter what he did to deserve the death sentence, he was the only man that she had ever loved. To be honest, the Assassin was the only person she could ever love. And after centuries of waiting, there he was, only three feet away from her, looking at her like she was a defenseless doe just waiting to be ravaged.

“Elias,” Aylinn uttered, barely above a whisper.
“Hello, Aylinn. It’s been far too long,” said the Assassin.

Aylinn couldn’t speak. She had thought about this moment every single day for 700 years. Waiting for the moment when she could hold him again. Or yell at him. Or refuse to speak to him at all. But no matter how many times she had played it through her head, Aylinn still had no idea what to do first. Her mind wouldn’t sit still. Her heart was racing. Her breathing was getting faster. She began to sweat. She couldn’t move at all.
