Tall ships and sail boats dot the horizon Soon to return home from their day in the sun I look far away, past my place on the harbor’s end at South Street Seaport, where this poem was penned Shedding lonely tears for what I no longer see warmed only by sipping my sweet jasmine tea Recognizing true romance in Brooklyn’s aging bridge still holding hands with Manhattan and Bayridge The sun also in love, spreads diamonds at Liberty’s feet but she refuses, already engaged in her enemies defeat No longer attracted by the glitter and the gold or even on the majestic eagle flying proud and bold As her bloodshot eyes zero in on the grave of her twins and strain overseas to heroes fighting for freedom to win She’ll wait up late for sons and daughters returning from war her torch burning bright outside her harbor’s door |
