Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Star Trek Movie
The major mistake going on is the assumption that I, or any of this film's other critics, absolutely loved every other Star Trek property ever created. That isn't the case, in fact to me I think the films are anywhere from a 2:1 or even 3:1 ratio of bad films and episodes to good ones. The key to any response/ disagreement is never missing the disclaimer "in my opinion". Once said, everything that follows after is subjective and only as concrete as I opt to make it.

Gene Roddenberry was an idealist but also a great many other things, as flawed as any of us, true, but his dreams inspired others to dream bigger and better, taking a Pinto and turning it into an Aston Martin. When you go backward to say with arrogance this is what you did, but I can do it better, you must DELIVER or come up with your own, ORIGINAL idea. This new film in my opinion, didn't do that. Yes, Star Trek's origins had a character roster of stereotypes built on prejudices, ignorance, and what would sell back then but what is the excuse now? In the world of globalized information access and social networking, we can interface with people from every walk of life, every flavor and ethnicity. Better special effects can't be the achievement bar for Star Trek's ongoing mission and why should we "cut them some slack" as opposed to demanding not less but more of any creative team wanting to take a swim around this particular pool...?

It wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen (though ENTERPRISE might be the worst show in creation) and what I was looking for wasn't there. Again, hey, that's just me...
