That's the consensus thus far, but my only issue with third person, past tense is I find it difficult to write without making it ostentatious. On the other hand, as you said, most people find present tense awkward to read. I think I've ruled out using first person all together. I just can't imagine switching viewpoints while writing in first person. Haha!
