I think it depends on the purpose of writing them into the story. If it's just for the purpose of making the environment of the story seem more realistic because of diversity, but the colour isn't a particular focus or issue of the story, then to be honest, I don't think it adds anything. Rather, seems like a token nod.
But if it is to portray issues and problems of POC in a white world, or the colour is a vital part of the story, then go for it, but research thoroughly so you are writing from an authentic and realistic place. Avoid stereotypes. I think the same applies to any character that is different from yourself.
