Writing exercises are a great tool for helping improve your writing, but I think best used alongside writing your fiction. Particularly good are exercises that practise writing similes, metaphor and other literary devices. Getting the hang of these is a great way of enriching your writing. Also, it can help entering some of the contests on here, especially those that are not your usual genre, or have prompts on a theme you wouldn't usually write about. It all helps develop the craft of writing.
