I agree with everyone on this subject, but I just wanted to say that it helps to make your characters as interesting as you can if you're writing a novel. Stephen King has been known to make his characters so interesting and personal that the reader will actually cry if something happens to them (The Stand, for instance). He makes them real, and that in itself is a sign of a good writer.
