What if the grim passages are your way of working through emotions/states of mind you don't consider to be you? Sometimes when we're trying not to think about something the very first thing we do is think about that forbidden topic. It might be worth going with the flow of these things, as being willing to grapple with dark feelings can improve your writing skills overall. It will help you understand when your characters face difficulties that take dark turns. I actually had a bit of an opposite scenario happen to me several years ago. I love grim work and write it frequently. However, I went on a romance kick. Instead of fighting it, I went with it. As a result of trying something lighter, I found it easier to create believable friendships and family bonds in probably the most unsettling dystopia I've ever written. That dystopia needs edits, but the relationships I created were more believable because I explored the lighter side of writing that I pushed to the side for many years.
