The button bar does not work exactly like similar button bars in, for instance, MS Word.

The detailed directions for using the writingml button bar are located in Enhance Your Item With WritingML from Writing.Com 101 . The two most common problems are --

The text to be affected must be highlighted before the button is clicked.
The tags should appear on either end of the highlighted text, or if there's only one tag, at the left end or at the cursor location. The tags will be included in the highlighting in case you want to add another pair of tags.

If you don't unhighlight before starting to type again, what you type next will replace the highlighted text.
