For an article, length will depend on where you're submitting it as that's really not very long, but also depends on the comparison. Newspaper article, might be too long. History based magazine, length should be find.
I probably wouldn't label it as epic but more because it tends to be used in reference to long novels and big stories. Think epic fantasy, for example. That label might be a little misplaced in this particular instance.
Article length does vary on source of publications. So, it will really depend on what you're wanting to do with the article when finished.
