50 GPs were sent to Arakun the Twisted Raccoon with this post.
Mike hurried down trail. Pausing, he put on his solar glasses. Already the sun’s edge was uneven. If he wasn’t at a stopping place during totality, he might miss both the eclipse and his way. This whole trip was a blunder, he thought. Fancy racing up a mountain to find an uncle who wasn’t there, jeopardizing the only solar eclipse he’d ever see. Here was the secondary trail he remembered. Then he stopped, so suddenly he almost lost his footing. Of course! Perhaps Uncle Phil had come here instead. Mike turned and rushed up trail. Once he nearly tripped over a tree-root. Slow down, he told himself, or he’d break his neck. He studied the sky again. Now the sun looked like a penny one-quarter-overlaid with a dime. Then he scanned the dim area for his trail. Spotting a boulder wedged into the shadowy slope above, he almost laughed aloud, it so hilariously resembled Uncle Phil’s head. Finally striding up the rocky hill and to the bald crown, he found two people squatting in camp-chairs and gazing skywards. Casually Mike greeted them. “Hey, is that you, Uncle Phil? It’s getting dark, isn’t it?” “Yes, and stop blocking my view.” Uncle Phil waved him aside. “How are you doing?” “Fine.” Swallowing, Mike realized that he’d come up here to find how to move forward with his life. Ever since Uncle Phil married, Mike knew he might lose his easy millions, but two fatalities, even during eclipse darkness, would be too suspicious. He must wait. Uncle Phil smiled. “We haven’t told yet, but Zoe and I are expecting.” “Congratulations.” Above, the glowing crescent narrowed to a sliver and then disappeared. Everyone took off glasses to gaze at the black sun and corona. How appropriate, Mike pondered to himself. Occluded again, as always. [300 words] |
