The default order value for a created item is zero.
The default sort order is newest at the top by creation date.

If you never use the portfolio reorder tools, your portfolio/folders will automatically sort with newest at the top of the list.

Every other sort order must be handled manually by you using the ordering tools.

Once you have used the portfolio reorder tools, your items are given non-zero order values based on their location in the portfolio or folder. When a new item is added after that, it has a zero order value, so the system uses the non-zero values to maintain the intended order for those items, and then below that, uses the default sort as the secondary sort to deal with any leftover items with zero order values.

Which means that after an ordering operation and adding several items, your newest addition can wind up in the middle of the folder/portfolio.


If you want to go back to default sort order after using the ordering tools, use the Reorder (non-drag-and-drop) tool to set all order values to zero and save the changes.
