I usually define myself as a writer when someone is asking me why I don't talk more :) I'll say (or write) something like, "I'm a writer, not a talker." I'm someone who needs lots of time to think and process before (and while) responding. I do this best by writing. I'm a terrible conversationalist, with too many long pauses, or interrupting, never know when it's my turn to speak or not, I miss social cues, too honest, too abrupt, too direct, too aloof, etc. I'm the kind of person who laughs inappropriately and would tell bad jokes at funerals—the proverbial "socially awkward penguin" as my children call it. Writing is my playground and I know the terrain quite well. Thus, I am a writer, by my own definition.
