I completely agree with KenF in that experience doesn't equal quality. If a writer has spent 30+ years enforcing bad habits and never really focused on improving, then they're probably worse off than if they'd spent just one or two years on actually practicing.

And since we're talking WdC contest, I'd definitely say just go for it. Entering won't cost you anything, and if you're lucky the judges might provide you with some feedback, which is really the best thing a contest like that can offer.

If you really want to try your hands at winning, you could always go for a small/new contest with few entries.
