I've been poking around here for a few years and still feel like a newbie here. I keep on wondering if it has to do with the layout at this site but I don't have a clue as to how they could do it any differently that would make it more user-friendly.
It's good to know I'm not the only one here who has had problems with navigating around this place. And yes, I think you're right. This is a good place for writers to receive and give help and just hang out.
