It sounds as if you're like me, ideas just keep poppin' out.
I'm writing a novel at the moment (two years and still going), but while I've been working on it, I've had ideas for a further 40 novels. I usually spend somwehere between two and three years working on world-building and character creation before I sit down and work out (a) what the story is and (b) what the plot is. Only then can I draw up an outline, and from that I begin plotting each scene. Once that's all done, I'm ready to start writing the novel.
If you don't know the difference between story and plot, mail me.
I use Zim-Wiki both as a journal where I can capture new ideas (an idea forgotten is an idea lost forever, so write it down!), and a womb for exploring and gestating a novel. It's free software (for Linux and Windows only), dead easy to use and helps organise and collate ideas. It's dead easy to backup too, I just copy the data folder to a thumb-drive.
