There's a lot to learn, yes, and the learning curve is pretty steep to begin with - or at least, it may appear so. One of the rather nice features of creative writing is that you can learn just one thing at a time, then move on to the next.
An agent at a 'meet the agents' meeting said: "Most people don't get published because they give up too soon."
There is plenty to learn, but nobody knows everything (we all continue to learn), and there is room for ambiguity too (the Oxford comma is a good example). Think of it this way - learning is half the fun!
