First of all, this is an amazing idea you've got there. It touches so many themes, I'm intrigued.

About your question: depends on what you want. Your story can be read as a metaphor for political problems of our times. Is that what you're going for? Keep it short then. So it can be read by many people in a short amount of time.

If, however you're more into the historical aspect of your writing, the book can benefit from expanding the description of these actual events. It could be like a window into that time.

The last point is taste. Personally, I barely pick up endless reads anymore. Maybe my attention span has shortened like so many others. If a book has an epic volume, I'd only pick it up if it's a known name.
