It would be a copyright infringement. They have copyright on the original work and all derivatives, including movie and tv rights, and reproduction in different formats (including novel, short story, radio play etc). Derivative also includes work based on characters and situations suggested in the original, even when the story is different (e.g. a sequel, prequel, side-story etc).
