Changing a username and transferring the account contents involves extra processing, therefore a fee is charged for it.

What you can do for free is to simply close the account you have now, and open a new account with a new username. The terms of service do not allow you to have more than one account at a time, but closing an account and opening another is allowed.

Since you have a free account with little if any account contents, and seem to use the site only as a reader, that would make the most sense anyway.

Before deleting your account, you can hand copy the item numbers for any favorites from your favorites list, and any usernames from your email contacts. You can forward any emails you want to keep to an offsite email account.
