Hello, and welcome! Don't worry about feeling overwhelmed, I felt the same, and still do sometimes. My best advice is to explore. Click random links, read carefully, and it slowly starts to make sense, I promise.

I read your exercise in your portfolio and I think you're an excellent writer already. The conversation felt very real and down to earth, just two friends (or more) building one another up. Have some more confidence in your abilities and keep on writing. My only suggestion is to use more contractions, as most people use "I'm" as oppose to "I am" and things like that.
