My rule of thumb is, clinches can be used but not overdone. (I apply the same rule for stereotypes as well) Why do I say that they can be used? Because sometimes it does fit. I also say not overdone because one wouldn't want a piece full of them. Unless that was part of the plot/theme.
Real life has clinches. So to completely disregard them when they are needed can hurt the sense of reality in a piece.
