The fatal sickness is your ticking clock -- a deadline for what needs to happen in the story. The sickness could also throw monkey wrenches that complicate whatever else is going on. Otherwise it's just background.
If you use the situation to force the characters to focus on solving the actual problem the scene or story is about, it shouldn't be a problem.
You might want to think some more about what kind of events can actually cause a magical thinker/procrastinator/problem-ignorer to change their ways, though. One of them has to overcome that failing. The one failing to heal the other doesn't sound like it would qualify, tantrum notwithstanding. It just returns them to the situation where they were already ignoring the problem.
