Re: Time Jumps

Here's a method I've used, which works well. Simply starting a scene with a headline:

Sol 45: Terra Sabaea 5.45°N 53.95°E

A similar kind of technique was used in Andy Weir's The Martian, where he records the date (in terms of Sols) before each log entry.

Time skips are awkward, so if you're not chronicling the timeline, just go for the easiest and simplest method available so the reader can instantly know there has been a skip and by how much:

It took them an uneventful week to cross the plain before they finally reached the chasm and the bridge that spanned it.

A word about doing this within a single scene: events after the skip should appear in a new paragraph, but the skip itself can be the first part of that new paragraph or the last thing in the previous paragraph. e.g.

xx xxx xxx xxx. Two days later, the answer came to her.
Next paragraph...

or

end of paragraph.
Two days later, the answer came to her. event/action etc.
