Re: Chapters

There are a couple of factors to consider.

1. Interactives are a niche audience -- only so many people in the pool, who have only so much time available for creating new chapters, and the pool is competitive: your interactives are not the only options available. You may have already reached all the members who are interested in the topics of your interactives.

2. Your previous promotional work may not have reached members who might be interested and who are not aware of your interactives, or in an effective manner.

*X* You've tried the passive approach without getting results. The passive approach is also "me"-centric, which limits it's effectiveness. Passive marketing only works if it's placed where the potential customers are.

If members are not looking for new items in the site listings, they won't see your GP offer or your item. But if they're not looking, that indicates that they're using their time on items they already know about, and might not be interested in adding more to their to do list.

*Box* You could try an active approach, and go looking for potential participants. Note: This will mean spending time on marketing that you could have spent on adding to your own interactives.

A. Go read chapters in other members' interactives on similar topics. When you find a member who writes chapters you like, you could use the Tip function, which has an optional short comment text box, to invite that member to add to your interactives. Personalizing the invite works better than just a straight advertisement.

B. With writers who are interactive owners, a "we"-centric approach which offers an exchange in kind might be more of an incentive than being paid in GPs. Note: You do need to be aware of how much time you're committing to spend on other member's items when you do this kind of marketing. If time is a problem, this approach won't work for you -- it'll backfire.

You could add chapters to interactives on similar topics and/or do private reviews of those items that include both an actual review (preferably longer than the invitation) and asking if the owners would be interested in trading chapter-adds with you. Keeping this kind of review private means you're only issuing an invitation to people whose work you know you're interested in. Sending a review with an invitation and providing a sample of your own work makes a better audition. If you add a chapter first, you can use the chapter wml to link to it in the review: WritingML Help for chapter.

You need to be prepared to accept that people you invite might not be interested, and might either ignore the invitation or tell you no.

Hope that helps.
