Vrrp! aah the final turn of the last screw as through the coop and into the pen they came flopping and flailing their wings in obvious delight of their new abode. Becky headed for the barn and Zeke walked among the little quackers, reaching down to right the tipped bowl of water when a voice said, “ Mr. Zeke we would like to thank you for this wonderful new home!” Zeke, startled, took a few steps back and reached behind him to grab onto the wall of the pen, to keep from falling. What.. where.. Becky? Where are you? Did you just? But he turned and could see her silhouette fading in the distance at the door of the barn. “My name is Raymond Specklebutt and this is my lady friend Miss Mallard Greenhead. We are most appreciative of the wonderful job you did to our new home.” Well her bill is flappin, and it matches the words coming out, by golly this duck is talking. Just then Becky came back with an arm full of fresh hay, heaving it to the dirt and letting it splash out creating a layer of fresh covering. As she entered Raymond’s words turned to quacks and Becky had no idea what just happened. When Zeke asked If she ever heard of ducks talking, she laughed and said “Zeke your mom let you watch too many cartoons when you were a kid.” Then she headed back to the barn. When out of earshot Zeke said “why do only speak to me? “ “Its because you’ve gone above and beyond all humanity and we wanted to express our sincere gratitude Mr Zeke and we must do it directly.” Well, Zeke removed his hat and tipped it toward his grateful fowlers, “you are welcome.” |
