I always use voice to text, but I use Dragon Naturally Speaking and it has a bit of a learning curve before you get the commands right. It's also $$$ and I would not have purchased it if I didn't absolutely need it. I have #13 and it's finicky about headsets/microphones too.
It's fine to type words and basic punctuation, and some commands are intuitive. "New line" "New paragraph" that kind of thing.
I'm not sure if they have a free trial. Dragon was by far the most accurate.
I know my latest MS word (I have office 365) has dictation and it's hit or miss. The best dictation source I have, believe it or not, is my phone. Wildly accurate. I don't know how to get that from the phone to the computer.
