Here's the best advice I can offer to anyone thinking of publishing:
If you went the traditional route, through an agent, your writing and story quality needs to do two things:
1. Grab the agent's attention A LOT.
2. Be better than all the thousands of other submissions the agent received.
If you do not aspire to achieve both these goals, your story is never going to be a best seller, no matter whether you self-publish or get a publisher. Whichever route you eventually take, you really must aim to get over that bar.
