Well, my approach varies from project to project, largely because I have a full-time job, other interests (distractions) and a pesky house dog.
My only completed and published work was fairly easy, as it was based on an experience. I just had to flesh out the characters and create a compelling story when they're outside the courtroom. An odd confluence of events that occurred in early development changed the direction of the non-court story, shifting it to a commentary on race relations.
