The quick explanation is that each member of the site is a unique member and when they view an item, it only counts them once to add in to that unique section.
Statistics work in the way that all view to an item get calculated as "total views" but members are able to view items multiple times. This is where unique members come into place because it will only count each person once no matter how many times they view an item. There are also other statistics related to unique members so when someone visits an item, they have those stats associated with them so they get added into all of the other unique data.
