Well -- just to confirm, the system does work correctly -- item awards are correctly moved to portfolios upon item deletion.
(Along with reviewing the code, I re-ran the orphaned award process and there were none out of place.)

For some reason, at some point, you click to hide the award.

On your "Points" -> "Awardicons: Received" page you should have a notation with the hidden awards.
Clicking that lists your hidden awards.
Click the hidden award you want to show...
Then at the bottom of it, there's "show" link.
