I write in two main places. In the morning I sit at a little desk in my bedroom which has good light, developing particular stories or essays. After lunch and sometimes for lunch, I walk up to a coffee shop, mulling over the success or not of the morning's effort. There, I do facts, background, and design rather than creative writing.
Contrary to some, I enjoy the hubbub of the background activity while I'm working up there. It's friendly, but not pushy. Occasionally I meet other writers there and talk craft, publishing, and feedback with them. It's my office away from home.
