Depending on what you're writing, you can do whatever you want. But if you're sticking with tradition: Jon looked into the doorway and yelled, "Hey you."
I will put brackets into prose as placeholders for information or writing im not feeling at the moment.
eg:
John was walking down [name] street with a gansta limp and a bag of [some kinda red candy]. He spotted [neighbor]'s door was open and lost all interest in swallowing the mass of red glop in his mouth. [john chainsaws his way through the house and yadda yadda end with something about a red stain on his shirt]
But then i seed in the deets during the editing and eliminate the brackets. I'm not really committed to the chainsaw either. He might pick up a rock in the front garden and do the whole family that way. John is messed up like that.
