Man, anytime kids are supporting big coal, count me ... uhhh well anyway, what a great metaphor.
I think everyone else has the topic well in hand. I try to seed backstory with as few words as possible. Doing some editing now and man some of those "she thought back to when she was a kid" passages that seemed like such a good idea at the time just hurt.
I'd put the backstory in dialogue:
"What brings you here?"
A lead pipe and a bag of O-neg flashed in her mind. "The lake."
