I know plenty of greyhaired fellows who retain fantastic writing skills. Creativity is subjective and i find their writing to be ... more mature and less edgy. That might just be a generational contrast.
As for getting back into writing, i don't know if courage is the right word. I mean, if you're writing something with the potential to cause you personal embarrassment or harm, then absolutely. But if it's something you just want done and can't seem to execute, i think it more a motivational issue combined with some ring rust. Fortunately, writing is habit-forming if you abuse it correctly.
Start by reading the things you might like to write about. Then stop reading and write something. Maybe a super short story about a snake swallowing a cat. Why a cat you ask? Because you hate cats. 10 billion viral videos have seated some deep resentment in that cortex and only your words can hurt them. Rinse and repeat. The words will flow.
