Self-publishing is nice IF you're the sort who can move product. It's just like having a garage full of self-sealing diapers. You can sell them to people passing by on the sidewalk, or call up your ten best friends who happen to be CEOs of B&M retailers. That second part is what the publishers can do, while the former is what most (well, i speak for myself here) authors can likely do. Man, those self-sealing diapers, tho!
I have no experience with traditional publishing, but there's been good advice dropped here on the forum before. Tob mentioned figuring out which publishers you like as a first step. Also, pursuing an agent is helpful, perhaps necessary. Good luck.
