After some lean years in the early 2010s, physical book sales have started to climb again. In fact, it seems Harry Potter, Twilight and 50 Shades... helped keep physical books viable!
Digital book sales have stagnated. Or their growth has stagnated. I forget exactly which.
Audiobook sales are the fastest growing market at present. Sales are skyrocketing. But, as J.B. Ezar said - a good voice is vital. Very few authors can pull it off. Apparently. But what I have learnt is that many arts schools charge very minimal amounts so their students can record audiobooks, as it is part of their course. If you are serious, approach an arts college in your area and see what they can offer. Even down here in Australia, it cost me $50 to have a 75k word novel recorded, so long as the student could use it as an example of what he can do and submit it as part of his portfolio. Win-win.
