Aside from pre-paying eternally, there aren't really any other options.

You're telling us that Writing.Com would not know you were deceased as you don't want to bother with setting it up for us to be told.

So your original question of "What happens to deceased upgraded members portfolios when subscriptions cease?" is actually "What happens to upgraded members portfolios when subscriptions cease?" ... as the "deceased" part wouldn't be known by us, correct?

Site policy is that IF we're told that you've passed on -- and told in a verifiable way (which is policy because we've had people fake their own death just to watch people mourn their white-case memorial) -- then NOTHING happens to the portfolio. We maintain it in memory indefinitely.

If we're not told you've passed, your account is treated like every other account: "When Your Paid Membership Expires


Edit to add the follow-up of section 10-H from our membership agreement in terms of free accounts:

TERMINATION FOR ACCOUNT INACTIVITY
Members without a currently paid membership that are inactive for three (3) months or more may have their account terminated without prior notice or warning.

Again, while not actively enforced on a regular basis, we do purge from time to time and we are absolutely not required to maintain inactive free accounts indefinitely.
