dennis23468 It definitely depends on when and where. Growing up in the 60s in a blue-collar factory town wasn't the safest time or place. 70s small town Kansas was actually safer. In 00s Tulsa, Oklahoma it depended on which side of town. Where I am now is safe... for now... kinda... maybe.
When I travel I'm fine in Portugal or Taiwan; but, I'm more careful wherever the homophobia, xenophobia and islamophobia of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire lingers. The old Ottoman Empire is homophobic as well (in a different way) but much less xenophobic. I've been to all those European countries except for Greece.
I must say that there are allies everywhere. People can be good, be kind, be protective... especially where the prevailing culture is hostile. Finding a partner and a supportive community is key. Not so easily done.
