For me, considering the years I've spent on the site and the number of items I've written over the years, both have their purpose.
Books - I mostly use for novels. They often have more than one draft if I've made it that far and some hold more than one novel. I have also used book items for things like old poems so that I didn't take up the whole portfolio with hundreds of static items. If the item isn't needed as its own thing but I still want it available on the site, the book comes in handy.
Folders - These are good for trying to organize the chaos. I use them for genres of writing and to keep the activities separate from the fiction and such. In theory, it helps to keep things organized and for people to not get lost but... my portfolio is still cumbersome. But I try.
