Rach's Reading Club

For my second May book, I picked "The Forever Peace" by Joe Haldeman. It won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for best Novel in 1998.

The book is an anti-war science fiction novel by a an author who is a Vietnam veteran. It is about a futuristic military in which soldiers are jacked (i.e. linked together telepathically) which makes it possible for them fight together as one unit.

The main character is a soldier who has been jacked and is so sick of the action that he is almost suicidal. Eventually, the characters discover a way to stop war that is related to jacking and a peace movement develops which has to overcome the military Industrial complex.

I didn't exactly love this book. It wasn't as good as some of the other Haldeman novels I read. It was a suspenseful story at times and the protagonist dealing with his suicidal demons was the best part, but somehow the whole thing was not as compelling as I wanted it to be.
