Session #2 in the "Building A Mystery" Workshop.
Session #2: Setting the Stage, and Writing the Script

Welcome back to the "Let's Build A Mystery!" Workshop. I hope you enjoyed your first session, and any questions or difficulties have been satisfactorily answered.

In our first session, we overviewed the five "W"s of the mystery writer. Specific application of these components leads to the best writing, especially when applied specifically to the mystery fiction genre. Understanding and mastering the proper use of these components is imperative to the best mystery writing.

In this session, we will lay out some more general, or "usual" writing tools in your toolbox that, properly applied, will provide you with the best possible writing for your mystery short story. You should have your three characters lined out at this point, and have presented them for evaluation to the presenter. It will be extremely difficult to continue with our workshop if this has not been completed, as the workshop is "additive" or builds each future lesson on the one presented previously. You should not attempt to complete this workshop session until the assignment from Session #1 has been satisfactorily completed.

We should now have identified our cast of characters:

1. The Main Character is ?

2. The first important secondary character is the ?, or the ?. He/She/It needs an obstacle to overcome that is ? than themself.

3. The second important secondary character is the ?, who is set to try to work against the ? in the story.

4. The third important secondary character is the ?, who brings information or important information required to ? to the story.

If you feel comfortable with the answers to these questions, you should not have a problem answering the next questions:

5. What are the five "W"s of the mystery writer?

6. Summarize the importance of each, and tell which of them you have chosen to omit in your Puzzle--explain why.

The last question (#6) is critically important to our success in this second session, so be certain you have done the necessary work (or research, if necessary). Questions can be emailed to me at kybudman@writing.com. I will do anything I can to help you succeed in the workshop, and in your writing.

Once the above information is well in-hand for you, please continue by clicking on the document below, and experience the second learning opportunity. This session will work on setting the scenery, the plot, and the arc of your short story. There are some surprising tools you can use for the mystery that you might not normally consider. We will talk about some unique ways of using these tools to create action and excitement in your mystery short story.

As I explained to you in our first session, when I advised you not to get too attached to any part of this experiment, I have already made some seven significant changes to my story. From the first stop on the way through this workshop, I have advised against setting anything in stone--yet.

Now, as I review the work I have done in preparation for my short story, I realize that there are several things that have "changed" along the way. First, I realize this has happened because of the character development work I have done. Secondly, the story arc really indicates the need for such changes. Thirdly, I believe the story will benefit from them. So, I have made them--at this point. They (or others) may well change again before the story is done. Can you find the changes I have made to my story? Can you find changes in your own?

As we begin Session #2, it may at first seem as though the title of this session has been created incorrectly. Please trust me on this one: it is entirely accurate. Let's dig deeper, and see if we can, together, determine why. If, for any reason, you have difficulty seeing the document for
Session #2, you can click here.

Read the document attached below, and post your assignment link in the Forum under Session #2. I'll see you there. In the meantime,

Write Well!
