An audio of a poem for my book.
This poem will be going into my upcoming book, As Far As The Eyes Can See.

Civil War Reminiscing on the Way to South Carolina

My belly is full from biscuits and blueberry jam
to last me through our travels out of Virginia—
I have always loved Cracker Barrel’s jam biscuits.

Mom places my Skynyrd CD into the tape deck,
“Sweet Home Alabama” plays as we pass mountains;
the Appalachians look stunningly beautiful

against the gray sky with sun trying to peak out,
Confederate soldiers wave to us on the side
of the road, Yankees advancing quickly, sneak

attack—violently siege the capital’s courthouse,
yet the former Confederate capital looks untouched;
the border of North Carolina welcomes.
