Statue of a Roman Military Commander
Not only the ordinary soldiers would consult the Battle Priest or Augurer. Romes greatest leaders, even the Caesar himself, were known to have done this. Great importance was placed by pagan romans in the signs and omens discerned by the Prest. It was greatly feared if the omens were bad to proceed, and they might not recieve the full co operation of the soldiers if it became known the omens had not been favourable for battle.
