When you’ve exhausted yourself looking for your baby bunnies. |

We had some baby bunnies born in our backyard that we found in the garden. It had snowed a few days before and I noticed something strange in our flowerbed. I was afraid that it was a snake. Upon inspection, it was three baby bunnies that the momma had abandoned after Fable had chased it a few mornings in a row. There was another terrible storm moving in that weekend. I couldn't get ahold of Animal Services to help take them. Fable had snuck one of them out of the borrow and was headed in the house with it. I yelled and she dropped it immediately. My first mistake, the second was when I gently picked it up and placed it back in its bed. I realized that Fable was trying to mother them and take them in as her own. They probably would have lived. I covered their borrow up with a box because it was starting to snow hard again. I couldn't reach Animal Services on Friday afternoon and knew that it would be a matter of time before they would die. On Monday Services returned my call and came out within a few minutes. They had died a few minutes before they arrived their little bodies were still soft and warm. Fable watched the Ranger place them in a box take her babies in her mind and was frantically looking for them as soon as the Ranger left with them. She mourned them for days afterward. My baby girl doesn’t understand that her babies are gone. She exhausted herself looking for them. I had to go buy a stuffed one that looked like them. I took it outside and laid it in the borrow while she was inside. Then I let her outside she went directly to the flowerbed as she had for the past three days. I couldn't stand her being sad anymore. She uncovered the baby and ran inside with it to inspect it. She cleaned it up gently and tucked it in her blanket. She carried it around for weeks. My want to be a Momma! |
