The great festival of Durga Puja. Bengal, India. Represents the triumph of good over evil.
Durga Puja is one of the biggest Hindu festivals of India. In Indian mythology, like everyone elase, the Gods found it difficult to destroy evil represented by the demon Asura. They all fought the Asura but all of them failed individually. Finally, Shivas wife and consort Durga was given the powers by all the Gods to fight Asura. Asura had the powers to take any shape that he pleased. He could turn himself into any animal form and disguise himself and he was a wily warrior. But finally, Durga, with the combined powers and weaponry of all the Gods, riding on a lion vanquishes the Asura who fights disguised as a bull, the Mahishasura. Durga represents the femal power of the universe, the implementer of good deeds and destroyer of evil. In this image, lovingly created by the clay modellers of Bengal, she has ten hands which hold various weapons of the Gods. This is one of the great community festivals of Bengal, India and is celebrated throughout India and wherever Bengalis have migrated over the world.
