When you think you don't believe in ghosts.

Scariest Moment

Not long after the city turned Breckenridge Hospital over to Seaton Healthcare, I was contracted to evaluate the demolition of the old clinic behind the main facility. The building was built in 1894 and was last occupied thirty years earlier. It had been condemned for the past ten years and no one had been inside for a long time. The hallways were dark and dreary, with suspended ceilings collapsing, and water dripping from above. The lower level had ankle deep water and the environment resembled something you’d expect to see after the Apocalypse. It was when I was wading through this flooded floor that I began to here faint whispering ahead of me.

Now, I ain’t afraid of no ghosts. In fact, I have always told friends who are, that I have to see one first before accepting the existence of poltergeists. But hearing whispers ahead of me in the dark in this spooky environment, with me carrying a small flashlight, kind of got the Adrenalin flowing. As I moved further down the hallway, pushing dangling debris out my way, the whispering got louder, yet I still couldn't make out the words.

There was a room ahead where the sounds appeared to be coming from, so I headed straight for it. It was a large exam room that was positioned closest to the main building. The door leading in was missing, so I stopped to shine my light inside. The whispering sounded more like several people talking inside a deep cavern; more like an echo. The room was in worse shape than the spooky hallway, so I hesitated before stepping over the threshold.

Though my heart was beating so hard I could barely stand it, my curiosity was stronger and I had to know where the voices were coming from. With flashlight shining ahead, I stepped inside and began to scan to the left. As I turned to my right, there I saw the most frightening thing I have ever seen in my entire life. In fact, I think the shock took 10 years off my life, and I still have nightmares about it today.

It was a full length mirror, and there was this God-awful looking wet inspector, with a horrible look on his face, holding a flashlight, and looking back at me. For just an instance, I thought I was going to die. To this day, I avoid full-length mirrors.

After the fact: The whispering voices were coming from a vent that was connected to the cafeteria in the main building.
