After our male protagonist angers a gypsy, she places a curse on him which makes a him a receptacle for unwanted traits from others. All someone needs to do is say "I wish...." and if he can somehow accomodate to that wish by taking a trait of theirs, he will. WG, shrinkage (not to 3 in., but a reasonable scale), gender change, anything really.
